I find the contents of this site most fascinating. A long time ago I had heard that a section of the viaduct, possibly some of the balustrade, was salvaged and sited at the former Pontypool College of Further Education, Blaendare.
I was reminded of this recently by someone with an interest in railways.
Does any have any knowledge of whether this was in fact true and whether anything remains on the college site ?

1963 just started mechanical apprenticeship at Alcan Rogerstone. I had to attend Crumlin Minors School twice a week which I believe now might have been in Kennards old house. My first trip up the valley on the bus to Crumlin what a sight the viaduct was it took my breath away and helped shape the rest of my engineering working life. What a loss when they knocked it down. They would not be allowed to do that now.

My father came from the Crumlin area and he told me stories about the wonderful viaduct, which he had crossed many times. It saddened him greatly when he heard they had demolished it, such a shame, no foresight for a massive tourist attraction.

I've been on the Viaduct many times, walking along the wooden deck, which was underneath the railway lines. It was illegal but has kids we didn't really care.

Hi Kellyann, Brilliant, thks for the info. Had a hunch it may have been there but wasnt sure. I think it was big enough to be used as a hospital back in the 1900s.

I lived in Crumlin until the age of 11. The Viaduct was still standing when I moved. Such a pity to see the old village without it.

King, originally the stream would have run from Pen y Fan (before and after the pond was built, C.1796) it supplied a Pandy (fulling mill) used in processing wool. Hence the names Pandy road and Pandy cottage. The pond was originally built to supply the canal at Crumlin, but later was used for the railways. During the building of the Pen y Fan Industrial Estate the stream was diverted and it now runs down into the Sirhowy river. There was also a corn grinding mill in the area going on what the old farmers called the area around the Trinant road "Can y Felin".

I was brought up in a nearby village (Pentwynmawr) in the 1950s/60s and have been doing some local history research into that village. I have just come across a reference to Henry Nathan Maynard - General Manager at the Crumlin Viaduct Works from 1858 - having once lived in Pentwynmawr. Does anyone have any further information on where his house might have been or what happened to him after the Works closed in 1878? I know that in 1891 he was then living in Hammersmith ,London. Great website, this, by the way -have just discovered it. I can remember the Viaduct v. well -and its sad end. Also remember that film 'Arabesque' being made - created some excitement in the area.

I remember as a young girl, with others crossing the viaduct along the boardwalk which was under the train track. When we reach the other side there was a railway man waiting for us. He gave us a good telling off and threaten to report us to the police if it happened again.

In 1964, as a child of 7, I was a passenger on the last train across the viaduct.I don't remember it very well but I would love to hear from anyone who has memories or photographs of that day. This is a really interesting website!
