I lived in Crown Street from 1947 until 1967. I have enjoyed reading many of your contributions from your guests some of whom I remember from this period. They bring back many happy memories of my childhood in the shadow of the viaduct.

Thank you John for a great set of photographs. Sad to say, my new wife and I passed through Crumlin in 1958 on our motorcycle, viewing THE VIADUCT yet not realising its not too distant demise. Oh that we could have afforded a camera in those far off days and taken some pictures ourselves. Thanks to Beeching and Thatcher I found myself without a job which I enjoyed(twice) on the railway, I found work in other industries and it's just a pity that the Crumlin Viaduct could not have been saved as a historic artefact or given walking and cycling status. What views to be enjoyed by visitors these days and bringing revenue into the area too. Thanks again John, I shall visit your site again.

Thank you for this website. I found at a car boot sale an old postcard featuring Crumlin Viaduct with a stamp mark of 1910.
So I searched the internet for more information on the viaduct and came across this excellent website.

My Dad told me that the German air force tried to bomb the viaduct but they missed by some distance, apparently the bomb landed on Mynydd Maen. He also told me that the Home Guard patrolled the viaduct with broom handles as pretend rifles, but I'm not sure if he was kidding me or not?

I lived in Crumlin as a child and I can remember there being newts at the base of one of the piers on the Kendon. The West Mon bus used to travel up and down the Kendon on it's journey between Crumlin and Blackwood, also Jones buses on their way to the Trinant and Aberbeeg.

The viaduct was the most impressive structure in the country and it was a great pity when it was destroyed. It would have been a number one tourist attraction.

:My late father worked on the steam trains and spent a lot of his working life on the Vale of Neath line. Throughout his working life he must have crossed the viaduct at least hundreds of times.

Many Thanks to all who have contacted me regarding tickets and items. We are also looking to track down anyone who may have a piece of the viaduct to see if we can map how far pieces have travelled, if you do have a piece we would love to hear from you. Many Thanks

This viaduct was a first class example of the skills of the Victorian engineers. Just imagine what they could archive with the machinery available today. Good website, thanks.
