This viaduct was a first class example of the skills of the Victorian engineers. Just imagine what they could archive with the machinery available today. Good website, thanks.

A wonderful site.I used to live in Oakdale and as a teenager I walked along the catwarks, gaining access at the east side of the Kendon valley. Somewhere I have some 35mm negs.I am in contact with Gerald Davies who is nuts about the viaduct. Have you any idea how many stereo cards were produced?
In the current Victorian Socy's mag there is an article about the Navigation colliery. Regards Lance

Really pleased my dad's story is still on your site as he has since passed away. I was with him being nine years old at the time when we crossed on that last train. I still have the tickets in mint condition.j The site holds so many memories for me. Keep up the good work John.

Thanks for this website, I've lived in Crumlin all my life 70+ years and remember the viaduct very well. Some of your photographs of old Crumlin are fascinating.

I am hoping to come to Crumlin soon to see if I can work out where my relations - Winifred and Rees Hopkins - lived. I have very happy memories of visiting them as a child. All I can remember is that it was a terraced house near the big hill in the centre of the town and you could see the viaduct clearly from the back garden. I will allow myself a whole day to search !!

Fantastic website! Just loved all the photos and stories - happy days. My Dad from Bedwas remembers playing rugby at Hafodryhyns and the viaduct nearby. Shame on Beeching and BR for wholesale destruction of the valley lines in the 60s and 70s.

I lived in Kennard Terrace at the West end of the viaduct for over 20 years until 1956.Always interested in railways I have many memories of the trains which I saw daily.I have been in the signal boxes at each end of the viaduct and have even handed out the single line token to the engine driver.I travelled on the last passenger train from Pontypool to Crumlin High Level and still have the ticket.I remember during the war that the bridge was patrolled by soldiers stationed on Kendon Road.

I lived in upper viaduct terrace as a boy in the early 60's. My mum was Barbara Wilkins and her mother and several siblings lived in lower viaduct terrace. I remember the viaduct coming down. I also recall as kids playing in Crumlin being fearful of imminent attack from the Branchies of Swffrydd! Happy days.

My dad worked on the railways as a Fireman in his younger days, when he lived in Brynithel. He often went through Crumlin, and His dad was often on the same train, he was a guard in the guardsvan. He went to look at the viaduct when it was being dismantled. Great website, very interesting..
